Math Intervention

Whether your child is in need of extra support to keep up with their current mathematics, or just needs some catching up, we are here for you. Our team is able to support students who may be struggling in math, or have a specific math learning disabilities by utilizing a supportive, multi-sensoryapproach to address multiple learning modalities.

At one time or another we have all struggled with a math concept. Math differs from other content areas in that, more often than not, one concept builds upon another. For this reason, it is extremely important for students to master one concept before moving on to the next. If a student moves forward in math without understanding past concepts the foundation of understanding they are building begins to weaken. When this happens, students begin to feel anxious or frustrated with their work. They have trouble understanding the new concepts and making the necessary connections between concepts which is so important in their understanding. Students often begin avoiding math or just doing the minimum. They hope that they will somehow catch up later. This just increases the anxiety and frustration and reduces the chances of the student getting caught up later.

Teton Behavioral Therapy offers academic support for just these situations. Professional tutors can work with your child to form a deeper understanding of the concepts, lower their levels of anxiety or frustration, and help build more confidence. They can do this by working one on one with your child to identify where the student got off track and then begin rebuilding the connections from there. Sometimes student’s need to hear a concept explained in a different way, other times they may need to work through more concrete examples. We all learn differently and it helps to have someone pave a personal path when you have lost your way. Once students are able to fill in the missing pieces they often find that the current work becomes more enjoyable because it is more easily understood. Anxiety and frustration lessen and the student is a more receptive learner.

We at Teton Behavioral Therapy will work with your child to determine that path that is right for them. We want them to see math as a fun subject to be explored that sometimes requires hard work but is always rewarding in the end. We want them to learn the skills necessary to tackle the topic and the confidence to seek help when they need it before anxiety or frustration set it.
